You know that feeling you get when you first wake up and wonder if the thing you went to sleep excited about was real or actually just a dream? Well, that was me this morning as I drifted into consciousness and wondered if I’d dreamed this news about the Red Rising movie. It’s not a dream, Howlers. I checked. Pierce Brown has already weighed in on the announcement, and fans are understandably howling with excitement.
The Hollywood Reporter broke the news on Friday that Paramount Pictures picked up the rights for the movie. Francis Lawrence (The Hunger Games movies, The Long Walk) is attached to direct, and Justin Rhodes (Terminator: Dark Fate) is on board to write the script. The extent of Pierce Brown’s involvement in the adaptation wasn’t discussed, beyond that the article says he’s an executive producer on the film.
At this point, we can only guess when the movie will actually move into production. Lawrence has two other major projects listed on his IMDB page: The Bioshock movie (which Rhodes is also attached to as a writer), and Constantine 2 (I’m not counting The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping because that’s coming out in a month). Where the Red Rising movie fits among those priorities we can only guess. Still, this is a massive piece of news to celebrate, especially considering there’s a major studio attached.
Pierce Brown shared his own excitement about the news with a post on Instagram:
Let’s go!
Understandably, Howlers everywhere are celebrating. Here are some posts I’ve seen in my Instagram feed:
Here’s hoping we’ll get more updates about plans for the movie in the coming weeks and months. In the meantime, the next big update I’m really hoping for is news about Red God. The seventh Red Rising book doesn’t have a release date yet, and as far as we know, is still being written. Fingers crossed for an update on that from Howler 1 himself in the nearish future.
